31 January 2024
All 82 Dorset Council seats will be up for election in May this year along with all town and parish councils across Dorset.
Dorset Council unitary authority replaced the district and county councils in 2019. Greens won four council seats on the new council in 2019 and added a fifth in a by-election in Lyme Regis and Charmouth in 2022.
This time around Dorset Green Party will be aiming to double the number of Green Councillors on Dorset Council from 5 to 10, and help to overturn the slim Conservative majority. Currently the Tories hold 41 out of the 82 seats. So they only need to lose one seat to lose their majority. The Green Party will work with other parties to take power away from the Conservatives. The general election seems most likely to be held in Autumn 2024. You can find out about our candidates here: dorset.greenparty.org.uk/general-election/

In Rodwell and Wyke in Weymouth, Councillor Clare Sutton will be defending her seat held since 2015. Clare will be joined on the ballot paper in this 3-seat ward by two excellent new candidates, Val Graves and Claudia Webb. The current serving Green councillor Brian Heatley is moving out of the area. Dorset Green Party extends its thanks to Brian for his excellent service as ward councillor.
In next-door Melcombe Regis, Councillor Jon Orrell will be defending his seat. Jon was a GP in the area for many years and will also be the general election candidate for Dorset South.
In Bridport, Councillor Kelvin Clayton will be defending his current seat and will be joined on the slate by Julian Jones, who has served as a Bridport town councillor since 2015 and Bob Hamblett who is a Symondsbury parish councillor-elect.
Kelvin will also be the general election candidate for West Dorset later in the year.
In Lyme Regis and Charmouth, Councillor Belinda Bawden will be aiming to retain her council seat won in a stunning by-election victory beating the Tories in 2022.
In Marshwood in the far West, Greens are confident Jacqui Sewell will top the poll.
In Chesil Bank, Peter Reid will be the Green Party candidate. The Chesil Bank ward covers Burton Bradstock, Swyre, Puncknowle, Abbotsbury, Portesham, Langton Herring, Shipton Gorge, Litton Cheney and Little and Long Bredy.
In Dorchester, we have former mayor Kate Hebditch standing in the Dorchester East ward. She will be joined on election day by Poppy Farmer who will be standing again for Dorchester Town Council having come second in a by-election in July 2023.
On Portland, Catherine Bennett will be standing for the Green Party in this 3-seat ward.
Dorset Green Party is working hard behind the scenes to stand a record number of candidates so that as many people in Dorset as possible have the opportunity to vote Green.
