Green Councillors Clare Sutton (Rodwell & Wyke) and Jon Orrell (Melcombe Regis, and Mayor of Weymouth) were among the speakers at a Stop Portland Waste Incinerator protest in Weymouth on Saturday 16 November, attended by hundreds of concerned local citizens. The protest against the new Labour Government's decision to green-light the scheme was the lead item on Saturday night's BBC Spotlight.

A 20mph zone has now been introduced in Cross Road, Weymouth. This initiative has been strongly supported by Green Councillor Clare Sutton (Rodwell & Wyke), to make it safer for schoolchildren, elderly residents of Anning House and those using the doctor's surgery.

Rodwell & Wyke Green Councillor Claudia Webb organised a litter pick of Weymouth’s South Harbourside with Bennett’s. Claudia said: “It was good fun, and raised awareness about keeping our harbour clean.”

Like many others, Dorset Greens have opposed the proposed new incinerator on Portland from the outset, and are diismayed that the Government gave it the green light in September. Councillor Clare Sutton has made a further submission to the Environment Agency and is liaising with Dorset Council, the new South Dorset MP, and other parties about possible next steps, which may include High Court review.

Councillor Helen Toft says: "It was extremely interesting to visit the Wyke Water Treatment Plant with Councillor Clare Sutton and others this summer. In a smelly few hours we gained a better understanding of the processes, and asked lots of questions about sewage discharges."

Everyone in the Green Party movement is today celebrating the largest advance in our 41-year history, as the number of Green MPs quadrupled to four. In rural Dorset, there were some pleasing advances in the Green vote.

Dorset Council's new Liberal Democrat administration, elected on a promise of cross-party working, has appointed Green Councillor Clare Sutton as Cabinet Member for Children's Services, Education & Skills.
