Following a motion tabled by Green Party councillor Kelvin Clayton, and fully supported by all his fellow town
councillors, Bridport Town Council has applied to have the built-up areas of the town designated a 20mph zone. Dorset Council has approved this in principle for the town centre. They will make their final decision once they have analysed the results of the public consultation.
Kelvin says: “The aim of this change is simply to make the town a safer and more pleasant environment for everyone, and particularly for walkers and cyclists. It will not apply to the main roads in and out of town, and is not an attack on motorists as suggested by the empty rhetoric of our current Prime Minister. For many, if not most of the roads your councillors would like to make 20mph, anything above this speed is simply dangerous.”
