Mark Williams came second place in the Portland Town Council by-election in Tophill East on 10th July, beating Labour into third place. Congratulations go to Scott Horton for the “Independents for Dorset” party who won with 290 votes (47%) to the Greens in second place with 167 votes (27%) and Labour in third place with 166 (27%).
Mark said “First of all, my congratulations to the Independents for Dorset candidate Scott Horton.
“To those who supported me at the ballot box, my grateful thanks. Although I was born on the island and my parents lived here, I am a relative newcomer to the community and, as a result, I am not yet a familiar face on Tophill. Over the next few months, I aim to change that with involvement in the many impressive community groups, I will continue my involvement in the Portland Small Business Forum, and will always be championing the island. My wife, Toni, and I love this place with a passion.”
Dorset Green Party’s coordinator, Richard Edwards, said “Long gone are the days when the Green Party would receive 6 or 7% of the vote on Portland. Nowadays we are coming close or actually winning seats as we did in Underhill. I think voters see that we work hard and that we are in with a shout of winning.”
