Action in Support of Caroline Lucas’ bill to bring rail network back into public ownership

27 February 2015

Rail Action campaigners at Weymouth station, 27/2/2015Two hardy groups of rail campaigners handed out leaflets to early-morning rail travellers outside Weymouth and Dorchester Stations on Friday this week. This was part of a much wider series of actions at stations around the country.

The activists are publicising the second reading of Green Party MP Caroline Lucas’ Bill in the House of Commons to bring the rail network back into public ownership step by step. When franchises come up for expiry, or private companies break the terms of their franchise agreements, they would revert to the control of a public body.

The Bill is supported by MPs John McDonnell, Ian Lavery, Katy Clark, Jeremy Corbyn, Mr Elfyn Llwyd, Jonathan Edwards, Hywel Williams, Kelvin Hopkins, John Cryer, Grahame M. Morris and Martin Caton.

Local campaigner, Anne Clements said, "We continue to persuade people that the best way to obtain a coherent, integrated and expanding rail system is to run it for the benefit of users and taxpayers, not shareholders.  Many travellers agree with us, and have offered help. Over the two years we have been working on this campaign support has grown and grown – just like we hope the rail network will, if the Bill goes through".
